Mid Sussex/ Arun Valley Line Signalling

This weekend 14/03/2014 to 15/04/2014 sees the end of traditional Absolute Block signalling for Billingshurst, Pulborough and Amberley signalboxes and their replacement by control from Three Bridges. The following images are all mine taken in 2007 or 2013 and this isn't meant to be a comprehensive study of signalling at these locations as I didn't take pictures of every signal, intending to go back at a later date, but it didn't happen. In order from the London end of the line.

Billingshurst
Billingshurst signalbox has a wooden structure and has has been in this location since at least 1867. It is believed to have been secondhand from another unknown location. It is a rare survivor of the earlier style of box with narrow windows and is Grade II listed. At the time of writing I believe the plan is for the box to be moved to Amberley Chalk Pits Museum.

The rear and side of the box. The road is only one lane wide here and I believe the plan is to widen the road by either removing the stairs that are visible or to rotate them so they are clear of the road. 09/08/2013 Copyright Neal Cowdrey.

Pulborough
Pulborough box dates from 1878 and is a substantial box with a brick base and timber upper works.

Amberley
Amberley box is a small box on the Down platform incorporated into the station building. It dates from 1934 and replaced a box on the Up side nearer to Arundel. I do not have any pictures of it.
