A period of intense variation of rolling stock is happening on the Brighton Mainline at present with 319s, 377s and 387s on Thameslink services being replaced with Siemens class 700s. Class 442s on Gatwick Express and fast Brighton services are being replaced with class 387/2 units.
This has led to a couple of firsts on the West Coastway, firstly a driver training/ mileage accumulation test run of a pair of class 387/2 units ran via the West Coastway on one Bank Holiday instead of via Arundel. Additionally the very first (albeit loco-hauled) workings of class 442 units occurred, two units being dragged from Three Bridges to Eastleigh Works after coming off lease.
