4-Subs were first designed by the Southern Railway and introduced during WW2. The first batch had a square front aspect similar to pre-war 2-Hal units. Postwar units constructed from 1946 onwards had the curved cab profile as illustrated here. They operated on all three divisions of the Southern Region but were mainly displaced from the South Eastern Division by 2-EPB and 4-EPB units with the introduction of the 10 car railway in the mid 1950s.
They remained in service in the South Western Division until displaced by a mixture of service reductions and class 508 introduction.
The last units ran on the Central Division until September 1983, the last working being on 06/09/1983.
